Indicator 26
Definition: These stats measures the total revenue generated from the sale of agricultural products directly from farms (farm-gate) by census year, including all income received from the sale of crops, livestock, and other farm products before any processing.
Data Source: Stats Canada – Census of Agriculture
Updated / Frequency: TBD based on the establishment of distinct farm-gate sales census data
Policy Area: Agriculture
Purpose: To reflect the economic performance of the agricultural sector within the Region. Monitoring farm-gate sales helps gauge the health of the agriculture economy, indicating the sector’s ability to contribute to regional and provincial economic growth. This KPI provides insights into the trends in local agricultural production and their economic impact, which are essential for strategic planning and policy formulation.
Current Trends: Historically, data under “Gross Farm Receipts” showed a 46% increase from 2011 to 2016. In the 2021 Stats Canada – Census of Agriculture, the category “Operating Revenues” replaced “Gross Farm Receipts.” In 2023, this KPI was refined to “Farm-gate Sales” to more accurately represent direct sales from farms and provide a clearer assessment of true farm-level economic output.
