  • Definition: This indicator measures the changes in lands designated as prime agricultural areas within the region, tracking both increases from new designations and decreases due to re-designations for other uses.

  • Data Source: Municipality land use records

  • Update Frequency: Annually

  • Policy Area: Agriculture

  • Purpose: To monitor the stability and resilience of prime agricultural areas within the region, ensuring that agricultural capacity is not compromised by development pressures. This monitoring helps in maintaining food security and sustaining the agricultural economy.

  • Current Trends: Year-over-year assessments of the status of prime agricultural lands will identify trends in their expansion, reduction, or stability. Initial reports and analyses are pending.

  • Targets: Aspirational target for no net-decrease annually in prime agricultural areas (as designated by municipalities in MDPs) in Policy Area 1.

This KPI is newly established with no historical data at this time.

Definitions:

Prime agricultural lands: identified through LESA is the baseline. Prime agricultural areas identified by municipalities (informed by results of LESA) will be the second reporting of this KPI. Any subsequent changes a municipality makes to prime agricultural areas in their MDP will be reported.
