  • Description: This indicator tracks the total number and the location of all Parks, Protected Areas and Environmental Sensitive Areas (ESA) in the Region.

  • Data Source: Environment and Protected Areas – Alberta / Forestry, Parks and Tourism – Alberta

  • Updated / Frequency: 2022 / when updated by province

  • Policy Area: Natural Living Systems

  • Purpose: To assess the extent and distribution of protected areas to evaluate the effectiveness of conservation policies and practices in preserving natural habitats and biodiversity within the Region.

  • Current Trends: Trends show an increase in protected land due to new designations and the expansion of existing areas, reflecting a continued commitment to environmental preservation. This data helps assess the effectiveness of regional and national conservation initiatives.
