Indicator 13
Description: This indicator measures the number of private dwellings constructed and occupied in each period, specifically within centres and built-up urban areas.
Data Source: Statistics Canada
Update Frequency: 2022 / Every 5 years
Policy Area: Integration of Land Use & Infrastructure
Purpose: To monitor the construction of residential units to ensure an adequate housing supply that meets the changing needs related to demographics, employment, and affordability, supporting the region’s long-term sustainability and economic prosperity as it anticipates significant growth.
Current Trends: Over the past five years, the number of occupied dwellings constructed decreased by 6.6%, returning to levels seen from 2006 to 2010. This recent decline is attributed to increased lumber costs, disruptions in supply chains, and labor shortages, primarily due to the global pandemic between 2020 and 2022.
