Description: This indicator measures the average number of transit trips taken per resident within a specified timeframe, providing insights into the utilization and efficiency of public transportation systems across the Region.
Data Source: Member municipalities – transit ridership (number and population)
Updated / Frequency: 2022 / Annually
Policy Area: Transportation Systems
Purpose: This indicator is crucial for evaluating the effectiveness of public transportation initiatives and the extent to which they are preferred over private vehicle use. It helps gauge progress towards achieving sustainable urban mobility and reducing traffic congestion.
Current Trends: Transit ridership per capita has been generally stable since 2017 but shows a declining trend. A notable decrease occurred in 2021, largely attributed to COVID-19 related restrictions affecting public mobility.
Targets: Aspirational regional target of 3% annual growth in transit trips per capita to 2044 (total of 130 annual trips per capita (in 2044) based on 2020 levels).
This target will start on a region-wide scale, understanding that each municipality’s contribution to this KPI will be unique and may contribute to the target at different levels. Local specific targets should be explored in the comprehensive ten-year update of the growth plan.
